Les Jones Memorial Hits Quarter of a CenturyOver the past 25 years, Athletics Northern Ireland has run the Les Jones Memorial 10K in May, as a remembrance for the late Athlete, Team Manager and Chairman Les Jones who passed away in 1992. This year makes no exception, with the race taking place on Friday 13th May at the Mary Peters Track. The Les Jones 10K will start at 7.30pm sharp on the track itself, letting those runners who want to challenge themselves battle it out along the way. It will then take lead on to the Malone Road, where it is a relatively downhill run on a mainly flat course. This race is not for the faint hearted as the route will see runners through the wetland, riverside meadows and the mixed woodlands of the Lagan Towpath at Drumbridge. Continuing on to Shaw’s Bridge, Barnett’s Park and QUB playing fields before tackling a killer of a hill to end this picturesque race, returning to finish on the Mary Peters Track. Entry fees are £15.00 for athletics club members, £17.00 to unattached individual runners. Online entry is available at here. The closing date for online entries is 6th May. |

NI & Ulster Outdoor Track & Field ChampionshipsGiven the very congested fixture list in the earlier part of this year’s outdoor season it has unfortunately become necessary to change the arrangements for our Championships. These will be reduced from three days to two as follows: Day 1 Day 2 This year’s international calendar has European Championships in early July and the Olympic Games in mid August. The knock on effect of this means that both the UK and Irish Senior Championships are a month earlier than usual (25th & 26th June) with other traditional events being pushed earlier in the season. Therefore given the other important fixtures occurring in June the original dates and configuration of age groups were not viable both from an Athletes and a staffing and officials point of view. Athletics Northern Ireland and Ulster Athletics sincerely apologise for the undoubted inconvenience this will cause but believe that this rearrangement is the best option to deliver successful Championships. |

If someone had a cardiac arrest in front of you would you know what to do?
There are 1,400 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests in Northern Ireland each year – less than 1 in 10 people will survive. Every minute without CPR and defibrillation reduces the chance of survival by up to 10 per cent. Knowing CPR and being able to administer it immediately really does make the difference between life and death. British Heart Foundation Northern Ireland’s (BHF NI) Call Push Rescue Kit is completely free to sports clubs and community groups. The kit contains an educational DVD, demonstrating how to do CPR while trainees practise along using inflatable manikins. No instructor is needed as all of the techniques are taught using the DVD. All you need is a DVD player and a little space to practise in. The training kit covers how and when to perform CPR on an adult or child, put someone in the recovery position and use a defibrillator. For more information and details on how to apply go to www.bhf.org.uk/get-involved/in-your-area/northern-ireland/saving-lives |
