26 EXTREME TOLLYMORE TRAIL MARATHONS

After last year’s 26 Extreme Ultra, Full Marathon, Half Marathon and 10K in Tollymore Park I wrote “Next year I’m going to earn a burger too!” with the serious intention of entering and completing one of the distances this year. And so I did, but then along came a wedding invitation, offering much more than a burger and with my typical strong will power and obsession with always putting running first I succumbed to the temptation of the wedding feast!! Given the weather which presented itself at the weekend who can really doubt my psychic powers?
On the subject of the weather, the predictions of monsoons and gales were not entirely encouraging for anyone anticipating a walk in the woods but the clue to participation in these events is contained in their title. Anyway having passed my baton on to James Magennis I headed northwards for a marathon eating session, knowing that my burger would go to a good home. However if you read on you’ll find that my chosen option proved every bit as challenging as anything on offer in Tollymore. Continue reading

JUNIOR CROSS COUNTRY

JUNIOR CROSS COUNTRY

Castlewellan Forest Park on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon was the venue for the first round in this year’s junior interclub cross country series, once again generously sponsored by McGrady’s Financial Services. Junior athletes from East Down AC, Newcastle AC, Burren AC, Dromore AC and 3Ways AC will compete against each other over the five race series throughout the winter months for both individual and team prizes.

Once again the first race in the series was well supported and a large crowd of spectators were treated to an afternoon of competitive racing as the young athletes battled for both personal and team glory.

Our thanks to Newcastle AC for setting up a splendid course, their very efficient registration and the hospitality extended to all. Continue reading

“Blue Moon Walk” up Slieve Donard

“Blue Moon Walk” up Slieve Donard to support the “Mourne Mountain Rescue Team”

Friday 31st July sees a “Blue Moon”, which is, the second full moon in the same calendar month. To celebrate this rare event, we have decided to walk from Donard Park to the top of Slieve Donard, where we intend to enjoy light refreshments & hopefully view this spectacle (weather permitting).

This is not an organised walk, nor is it a race! However we are taking this opportunity to raise funds for the “Mourne Mountain Rescue Team” and hope to have a representative from the Team to collect any donations from participants. Continue reading

Busy Week

Last week began for me, as most of them do, on Wednesday, which is the day our local weeklies, the Recorder and Observer, hit the streets. A word of praise and thanks here to both for their superb coverage of athletics over the past months, especially of the Hill and Dale series, carrying reports, pictures and results of virtually every running thing.  Continue reading

MOURNE WAY CHALLENGES

MOURNE MOUNTAIN ULTRA MARATHONS

I wondered why Michael Cultra’s name was missing from the top 50 finishers in Thursday nights Hill and Dale race, and only discovered the reason on Saturday afternoon when I heard that he had been “resting” for his assault on the Mourne Way Ultra Marathon. By that time of course he and his fellow conspirators, Simon McGrattan, Oonagh Brétéché and Linda Cunningham had already been on the go for around 7 hours. Continue reading
