Castlewellan Christmas Cracker

Saturday 30th Dec saw the annual running of one of the most popular team races in N Ireland. Over 600 pairs of runners took on the multi terrain course, which changes each year to keep everyone guessing. With poor weather conditions early on the race could have been in jeopardy, but with a quick route change and improving conditions Newcastle AC got the runners to the start line. This race is a big favourite with EDAC and the club had 10 members in club colours or fancy dress. The rain held off and 1 344 runners set off though Castlewellan and into the Forest park and onto many muddy farmers fields, steep hills and tracks, finishing in front of the Castle on the campsite. This event has a great atmosphere and support round the course which is much needed at times. Well done Newcastle AC and the winners Jared

Martin and Thomas Renshaw. And well done to all East Down athletes.

Rollercoaster Races

ROLLERCOASTER RACES

The big question on the organisers lips last Saturday morning was Would the weather affect the numbers of schoolchildren who traditionally come to Downpatrick Racecourse every year for the Rollercoaster races? Wind and rain were not only forecast but present from early morning and with no trace of the Mournes to be seen it was not looking god. But we should have known better – these were for the most part Primary School kids who turn up, shiver, complain and then run their socks off!! And they did it in record numbers again with 265 Boys and Girls from P3 upwards take on the Primary School and Junior age group races. No prima donna tantrums from anyone despite some delays in getting the races started – it always seems worse when the rain is starting to seep down the back of your neck doesn’t it? – and everyone connected with the club was of the opinion that every one of the children deserved a medal for just turning up. Rollercoaster Races – Saturday 6 February 2016

On Saturday 6 February 2016 it’s the Rollercoaster races, at Downpatrick Racecourse beginning at 12.00 noon and climaxing with the Senior race over 25 furlongs (5K or 3.1 miles in non horse racing parlance) at 2.00pm in this unique setting.  This is not a Cross Country event as all the races take place on the perimeter road so there will be no wet or muddy feet to contend with and while there are neither hurdles nor fences to negotiate they are not flat races either!

100 ROLLERCOASTER RACES

One week later than usual but with the weather we have come to expect on Rollercoaster Day at Downpatrick Racecourse, last Saturday saw another record turnout of 243 children from P3 and upwards take on the Primary School races and bringing with them once more their unique take on competing to this superb setting.

East Down is again indebted to Toals Bookmakers for their sponsorship of this event which enable children across the district to display their sporting talents in an eminently safe environment. Continue reading
